UGig LLC ("UGig", "we", "us", or "our") operates the UGig platform at ugig.org. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our Service. By using UGig, you consent to the practices described in this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: name, email address, password, phone number, university affiliation, and role (student or poster)
- Profile information: bio, profile photo, skills, and portfolio images
- Gig information: gig titles, descriptions, locations, pricing, and photos
- Communications: messages between users, dispute descriptions, and reviews
- Payment information: payment details are collected and processed by Stripe. We do not store your full credit card number, bank account number, or other sensitive financial data on our servers.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Usage data: pages visited, features used, time spent on the platform
- Device information: browser type, operating system, device type
- Location data: approximate location based on your selected university. We do not track your real-time GPS location.
- Cookies: we use essential cookies for authentication and session management. See Section 6 for details.
1.3 Information from Third Parties
- Stripe: payment status, transaction confirmations, and payout information
- Email verification: confirmation of .edu email ownership
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the UGig platform
- Create and manage your account
- Process payments and payouts through Stripe
- Verify your identity and .edu email for student verification
- Facilitate communication between Posters and Students
- Send notifications about gig applications, acceptances, completions, and payments
- Send transactional emails (verification, password reset, payment receipts)
- Resolve disputes and enforce our Terms of Service
- Prevent fraud, abuse, and platform manipulation
- Analyze usage trends to improve the platform
- Comply with legal obligations
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share your information only in the following circumstances:
3.1 With Other Users
When you use UGig, certain profile information is visible to other users, including your name, profile photo, university, bio, skills, reviews, and verified student status. Gig listings are visible to all users at the same university.
3.2 With Service Providers
- Stripe: payment processing, payouts, and Connect onboarding
- Resend: transactional email delivery
- OpenStreetMap/Nominatim: address geocoding for map features (only the address text is sent, not your identity)
- Vercel: hosting and infrastructure (if deployed)
3.3 For Legal Reasons
We may disclose your information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or government request, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a legal request.
4. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal, tax, or regulatory purposes. Transaction records may be retained for up to 7 years for tax and compliance purposes.
5. Data Security
We implement reasonable security measures to protect your personal information, including:
- Passwords are hashed using bcrypt (never stored in plain text)
- All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS encryption
- Payment data is handled by Stripe and never touches our servers
- Rate limiting and abuse prevention on all API endpoints
- Session-based authentication with secure, HTTP-only cookies
However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.
6. Cookies
UGig uses the following cookies:
- Session cookie (essential): maintains your login session. This cookie is required for the Service to function and cannot be disabled.
- Theme preference (functional): stores your light/dark mode preference.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies.
7. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction: update or correct inaccurate information via your profile settings
- Deletion: delete your account and associated data via Settings or by contacting us
- Portability: request your data in a portable format
- Opt-out: disable email notifications in your Settings

8. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect and how it is used
- Request deletion of your personal information
- Opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell your data)
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights
9. Children's Privacy
UGig is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 18, we will delete it promptly.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through a notice on the platform. Your continued use of UGig after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
